Gencon 50

This is the first of several posts I am going to make about Gencon. I am planning to go this year for the first time. I usually try to go to Origins in Columbus because the hotels are much cheaper but this year is the 50th anniversary of Gencon so it should be special.

For those that don’t know Gencon is a gaming convention. It is all about role playing games and board games and every other type of game. It runs basically 24 hours a day for four days. It is going to be in August this year.

I am looking forward to trying out new games this year especially Starfinder. Starfinder is a science fantasy role playing game by paizo. It looks like it will be a lot of fun. I am looking forward to trying out many new games. Many new board games will premier here.

Of course I am going to  play some classics too. If I get my characters sorted out, I am going to play in the Friday and Saturday Pathfinder events. These are huge coordinated events with hundreds of characters on the same adventures at the same time.

Aniyher game I want to try out is Fate using the Harry Dresden setting. I love Jom Butchers books and I have wanted to adventure there for several years but the gaming session have always sold out at Origins before I could get signed up.

Check out fate and the Dresden Files:

I am going to go to the trade day at Gencon using my teaching credentials. This is a great thing. Many different gaming companies preovide lesson plans and free games for teachers. I am planning to get back into teaching so I am looking forward to this. I have always loved to include games in my classroom and the students respond well to the learning done with games.

Naturally I plan to do a bunch of blogging about the convention. I have several pieces planned for writing about the convention. I tell you about the trials of finding an affordable room, registering for games to play, and of course I will have much to say about products that are coming out and what I find at the convention. I plan for games to be a major part of this blog. It is a niche that has a lot of room for growth.

Are you planning to go to any fun conventions this year? I know a lot of people go to sci-fi conventions such as Dragoncon. I’ve never been to it either but it sounds fun and a little wild. I hope to get to a couple of smaller cons this year but I have a full slate of business travels planned so we will see.

Let me know in the comments what you are looking forward to as far as games and conventions are.
